A pillow is the most personal piece of bedding you own, and the easiest to get wrong. The right one disappears under your head; the wrong one quietly tugs your neck out of line for eight hours a night, and you wake up blaming the mattress. The difference usually comes down to a few numbers — height, age, and price per night — that nobody hands you at the store.

So we built them into three small instruments you can use right here, for free. Each one shows its own working: the formula sits beside the answer, the reference tables are a click away, and every figure traces back to published sleep-bedding research. Bench check

Lie down as you normally sleep and have someone look from the foot of the bed. You’ve nailed the height when your ear stacks over your shoulder and your nose points straight ahead — no tilt up toward the ceiling, no droop toward the mattress. If your chin tucks to your chest, go lower; if it cranes back, go higher.

Stomach sleepers ignore the shoulder adjustment (frame weight 0) — the goal there is simply to stay as flat as possible.

What loft is

Height is the one thing a pillow can’t fake

Loft is simply the height of your pillow once your head is resting on it — the gap it fills between the mattress and the base of your skull. It sounds like a minor spec. It is the single most important thing a pillow does, because loft is what holds your cervical spine — the run of vertebrae through your neck — in the same straight line as the rest of your back.

When you lie down, there is a gap between your head and the bed, and its size depends entirely on your position. Lie on your side and the gap is wide: your shoulder lifts your whole upper body off the mattress, and your head has to bridge all the way across to stay level. Lie on your back and the gap shrinks to the modest curve behind your neck. Lie on your stomach and there is almost no gap at all — your head is already nearly touching the bed. A pillow’s job is to fill that gap exactly. Too tall and it cricks your neck up toward the ceiling; too short and your head sags toward the mattress. Either way, the muscles and ligaments in your neck spend the night holding a stretch, and that is the stiffness you feel at 6 a.m.

This is why a single “best pillow” doesn’t exist, and why loft is measured by sleep position. The accepted ranges, which our calculator is built on, are 4 to 6 inches for side sleepers, 3 to 5 inches for back sleepers, and under 3 inches for stomach sleepers — often as little as possible, or no pillow at all.

Why your shoulders and your mattress change the answer

Two people who both sleep on their side can need very different pillows, and the reason is geometry. The wider your shoulders, the further your head sits from the mattress when you lie down, and the more loft you need to bridge it. That’s not a small effect: U.S. anthropometric data puts average shoulder breadth near 16.2 inches for men and 14.4 inches for women, and broader frames sit at the top of the side-sleeper range while narrower frames sit at the bottom. The calculator folds this in as a shoulder adjustment — and ignores it for stomach sleepers, where the goal is simply to stay flat.

Your mattress matters just as much, in the opposite direction. A soft, deeply cushioning mattress lets your shoulder sink in, which shrinks the gap your pillow has to fill — so you need a little less loft. A firm mattress keeps you on top of it, holding that gap open, so you need a little more. Most pillow guides skip this entirely; we treat it as its own term in the formula, because a great pillow on the wrong mattress is still the wrong height.

How to use it

It takes three taps:

  1. Pick how you sleep. Choose the position you spend most of the night in. If you genuinely switch, pick Combination — it aims for the middle and nudges you toward an adjustable pillow.
  2. Pick your frame. Narrow, average, or broad through the shoulders. When in doubt, average is the safe default.
  3. Pick your mattress feel. How much you sink when you lie down — soft, medium, or firm.

The big number is your target loft in inches. The side-profile diagram redraws to show a pillow of that height keeping the head level with the shoulder, with a dashed line marking the neutral spine you’re aiming for. The scale beneath it shows where your result falls inside the healthy band for your position, and the formula plate shows exactly how the number was built — a base height for your position, plus or minus the shoulder and mattress adjustments, then trimmed so it never leaves the safe range.

One practical note the calculator builds in for you: pillows compress. A fill pillow loses height the moment your head lands, and more as it ages, so it’s smart to shop a touch taller than your target and let it settle in. Adjustable pillows — the kind you can add or remove fill from — are the most forgiving way to hit a precise number, which is why we lean on them for side sleepers and combination sleepers.

Finally, trust your own neck over any number. Lie down the way you actually sleep and have someone look from the foot of the bed: your ear should stack over your shoulder and your nose should point straight ahead, with no tilt up and no droop down. Press firmly into the centre for five seconds and let go — fresh foam rebounds within 5–10 seconds. If a dent lingers, it’s done.

The fold test always wins. A flat, lumpy, or stale pillow is finished even if the math says otherwise.

Even a perfect pillow has a shelf life

A pillow fails in two ways at once, and only one of them is obvious. The visible failure is support: fill flattens and clumps, foam loses its rebound, and the loft you carefully dialed in slowly disappears until your head is resting on a thin, uneven pad. The invisible failure is hygiene. Night after night a pillow absorbs sweat, skin oils, and shed skin cells, and it becomes a home for dust mites and their allergens, plus mold and fungal spores in humid rooms. Washing the case helps; it doesn’t reach the core. This is why bedding makers and sleep researchers treat a pillow as a consumable, not a keepsake — and why “how old is it?” is a fair first question even when a pillow still looks fine.

How long you get depends almost entirely on what’s inside. Cheap polyester and down-alternative fill is the shortest-lived, often flattening within one to two years. Feather and down last longer with care, roughly two to three years. Solid memory foam and shredded foam hold their shape for about two to three years before the rebound goes. Latex is among the most durable mainstream fills at three to five years. And buckwheat-hull pillows are the outlier — the hulls can last eight to ten years, and you can top them up rather than replace the whole pillow. How to use it

Working the lifespan checker

Choose your pillow’s material and drag the slider to its age. The headline reads out the percentage of its life you’ve used, the gauge shows how close you are to the “watch” and “replace” marks, and the verdict tells you whether it’s in good shape, worth keeping an eye on, or genuinely past due. The formula is deliberately plain: your pillow’s age divided by the expected life for its material. A protector you wash weekly and a good fluffing routine push you toward the top of the range; neglect pushes you toward the bottom.

But the calendar is only a prompt. The real test is in your hands, and it overrides the math every time:

Strip the case, fold the pillow in half, hold it for ten seconds, and let go. A pillow with life left springs back to shape within about five seconds. Memory foam takes a touch longer — five to ten seconds — but should still fully reopen. If it stays folded, creeps back unevenly, or you can feel permanent lumps, it’s finished, no matter what the number says.

For loose fill like down or polyester, there’s an even quicker version: fold the pillow over your forearm and squeeze it flat, then release — healthy fill plumps straight back, while spent fill just hangs there. Run whichever test fits your pillow once it crosses into the “watch” zone, and you’ll never be guessing.

The number that reframes shopping

“Expensive” is a sticker price, not a real one

Pillow prices are quoted the wrong way. A $25 pillow looks like the obvious saving next to a $120 one, and at the register it is. But you don’t buy a pillow for a moment; you buy it for every night until it wears out — so the honest comparison is cost per night, and that’s where the gap collapses. Spread a $120 latex pillow across its four-year life and it works out to roughly 8.2 cents a night. Spread that $25 polyester pillow across its eighteen-month life and it’s about 4.6 cents a night. The “budget” pillow is genuinely cheaper — but by under four cents a night, the price of a few seconds of your morning coffee, in exchange for a pillow that holds its support far longer and you replace a third as often.

That’s the whole point of the tool: it turns a scary sticker into a number you can actually weigh against the sleep you get. A budget pillow will usually still hold the lowest cost per night — so if you run hot and replace pillows often by choice, or you’re buying for a guest room, it’s exactly right. But notice how small the gap becomes: a few cents a night is a modest toll for better support and a third as many trips to the store, which is why a premium pillow is far easier to justify per night than per receipt.

What is the best pillow loft for side sleepers?

Most side sleepers do best between 4 and 6 inches of loft — enough to bridge the wide gap between the mattress and the head that the shoulder creates. Broader shoulders and firmer mattresses push you toward the top of that range; narrower frames and softer mattresses toward the bottom. The loft calculator above pins the exact number for your body.

Can one pillow work for every sleeping position?

Rarely with a fixed-fill pillow, because each position needs a different height — high for side, medium for back, very low for stomach. If you switch positions through the night, an adjustable pillow you can add or remove fill from is the most reliable way to stay in the right range, which is why we steer combination sleepers toward them.

How do I measure my current pillow’s loft at home?

Lay the pillow flat on a firm surface, rest your head on it as you would in bed, and have someone measure from the surface to the base of your skull. That compressed resting height — not the fluffed-up height on the shelf — is your true loft. Compare it to the target the calculator gives you.

Is it worth replacing a pillow that still looks fine?

Often, yes. A pillow can look intact while it has lost the rebound that supports your neck, and while it has collected years of dust mites, oils, and dead skin that washing the case can’t reach. The fold test settles it: if it doesn’t spring back, it’s done, whatever it looks like.

Does a more expensive pillow actually last longer?

Not because of the price, but because of the material — and durable materials tend to cost more. Latex and high-density foam outlast cheap polyester by years, which is exactly what narrows the cost-per-night gap. Run two pillows through the cost tool and the real difference is usually a few cents a night, not the multiple the stickers imply.

The loft model is an additive estimate (a base height by position, adjusted for shoulder frame and mattress feel) clamped to the consensus healthy range for each position. The lifespan figures are single working values drawn from inside the published ranges below, and the cost tool simply divides price by the nights a pillow will last.
